The county is located in northwest Iowa, about 30 km to the north from Minnesota and about 70 km to the west from South Dakota . It has an area of ​​1483 square kilometers, of which nine square kilometers are water.

In Clay County, the Ocheyedan ​​River flows into the Little Sioux River , which flows through the county from north to south and flows further southwest into the Missouri .

Clay County was formed on January 15, 1851 from territory that was designated as free - but actually populated by Indians .

It was named after Henry Clay Jr. (1811–1847), a son of Henry Clay and an officer who died in 1847 in the Battle of Buena Vista in the Mexican War .

By October 1858, the county was part of the administration of Woodbury County .
