The Lyon County is a county in the US state of Iowa . At the 2010 census , the county had 11,581 people and a population density of 7.6 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Rock Rapids , named for its location on the Rock River .

The county is located in the far northwest of Iowa on the east bank of the Big Sioux River , which forms the border with South Dakota . In the north, Lyon County borders Minnesota . history

N. Lyon

Lyon County was formed in 1851 from former parts of Woodbury County. It was named after General Nathaniel Lyon (1818–1861), an officer in the Mexican War and the Civil War .

Iowa County has a National Historic Landmark , the Blood Run Site . 9 other structures and sites in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places .
