The county is located in northeast Iowa, about 25 miles south of the Minnesota border . It has an area of ​​1298 square kilometers, of which two square kilometers are water.

The northeast of the county is traversed by the Cedar River , which is part of the Mississippi River basin over the Iowa River . The Shell Rock River flows through the southwest of the county and joins the Cedar River further south.

Floyd County was formed in 1851 from former parts of Chickasaw County. It was named after Charles Floyd (1782-1804), a member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition .

According to the 2010 census , Floyd County had 16,303 people in 6,642 households. The population density was 12.6 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, 2.33 people lived in each of the 6642 households.

The racial the population was composed of 95.8 percent white, 1.2 percent African American, 0.1 percent Native American, 1.3 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 0.8 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 2.0 percent of the population.
