The county is located in north-central Iowa and has an area of 1,509 square kilometers, of which five square kilometers are water.
The west of the county is traversed in a north-south direction by the Boone River , which belongs to the Mississippi river basin via the Des Moines River . The Iowa River flows through the northeast of the county and also flows into the Mississippi from the right.

Wright County was formed on January 15, 1851. It was named after Silas Wright (1795–1847), a former Senator (1833–1844) and later Governor of New York (1845–1846), and after Joseph Albert Wright (1810–1867), the tenth Governor of Indiana (1849– 1857).
