In 1859 its own administration was set up. Estherville was chosen as the administrative center. A separate court and administration building was not initially built because an earlier one was used for it until 1876. This fell victim to a fire in 1876.
After an alternative county seat was considered in between, it was finally agreed in 1883 on Estherville. Immediately afterwards, a new courthouse was built in the center of the city.
From around 1916 the need for a more modern building was identified, but it was not until 1954 that it was decided to build. The foundation stone was laid in 1957, and today's Emmet County Courthouse was completed a year later .
