Bremer County was formed on January 24, 1853 from territory that was designated as free - but actually populated by Indians . It was named after the Swedish author and women's rights activist Fredrika Bremer (1801–1865). This makes Bremer County the only one in Iowa that was named after a person from literature.
The city of Waverly, which has existed since 1850, was the first administrative seat, which, unlike many other counties in Iowa, has never changed.
The first courthouse, a small one-story house, was built in 1851. As early as 1858 this was replaced by a larger brick building. Since this building was no longer up to the gradually increasing tasks, another building was built next to it in 1870. Both buildings were demolished in 1937 and a larger building was erected in their place.
In 1975 the sheriff's office and prison were moved to a separate building.
In 2003 the Bremer County celebrated its 150th anniversary.
