The Louisa County is a county in the US state of Iowa . At the 2010 census , the county had 11,387 people and a population density of 10.9 people per km². The county seat is Wapello , named after a chief of the Fox Indians.

The county is located in southeast Iowa on the border with Illinois , which is formed by the Mississippi and has an area of ​​1082 km², of which 41 km² are water. It borders on the following neighboring counties:

history

Louisa County was formed on December 7, 1836. It was named after Louisa Massey , who was very famous here at the time for avenging the murder of her brother by shooting the person responsible.

The first courthouse was a wooden hut. In 1840 the second, approximately 12 × 6 m, one-story stone courthouse was built. The third was built in 1854. The courthouse, which is still in use today, was built in 1928.

Louisa County has a National Historic Landmark , the Toolesboro Mound Group . 7 other structures and sites in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places .
