The Monona County is a county in the US state of Iowa . At the 2010 census , the county had 9,243 people and a population density of 5.2 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Onawa .

The county is located in western Iowa on the east bank of the Missouri River , which forms the border with Nebraska . It has an area of 1795 square kilometers, of which 15 square kilometers are water. The following counties border Monona County:

history
Monona County was formed in 1851 from former parts of Harrison County. It was named after the Indian word for "beautiful valley".
