Plymouth County was formed on January 15, 1851. Settlement began in 1856. In October 1859 the first courthouse was built and the first public school opened its doors with 32 students. In 1872 the county government moved to Le Mars and in 1873 a new courthouse and prison were built there. The courthouse, which is still in use today, was built in 1900 from red sandstone.
During the Great Depression of 1929, farmers organized into a group called the Farmers Holiday Group . A radical group of them kidnapped Judge Bradley from his courtroom and threatened to hang him outside the courthouse. Bradley was liberated, but the governor summoned the National Guard to Plymouth County and declared a state of emergency, which meant the end of the Farmers Holiday Group.
