The city was laid out with the construction of a railway line for the then Chicago and North Western Transportation . There is a tradition about the origin of the name Le Mars that the railroad entrepreneur John Insley Blair asked five women at the station, then still known as St. Paul Junction , to suggest a name for the newly emerging city. The women - whose names L UCY Underhill, E lizabeth Parson, M ary Weare, A nna Blair, R ebecca Smith and S arah Reynolds denominated - decided to use the first letter of their first name.
