Sioux Falls [ SU fɔːlz ] with 174,360 inhabitants (estimate 2016), the largest city in the US -amerikanischen state of South Dakota . Sioux Falls is the administrative seat of Minnehaha County and extends in its southern part into Lincoln County .

Sioux Falls is located in eastern South Dakota at the falls of the Big Sioux River , a left tributary of the Missouri . The geographical coordinates of Sioux Falls are 43 ° 32 ' N , 96 ° 44' W . The urban area extends over an area of 190.29 km², which is spread over 188.97 km² of land and 1.32 km² of water.
history
The city was founded on the banks of the river in 1856 and was one of the earliest urban developments in South Dakota . The founders were land speculators who claimed the land before prospectors and railroad workers reached the area. In 1990 Sioux Falls and Potsdam entered into a city partnership. This is the oldest town twinning between an American municipality and a city in the new federal states.

Interstate 90 runs along the northern outskirts in an east-west direction . Interstate 29 runs through the west of the metropolitan area and is the shortest connection from Kansas City in Missouri to Winnipeg in the Canadian province of Manitoba . Interstate 229 , the eastern bypass of downtown Sioux Falls, runs through the eastern part of the city . In addition, South Dakota Highways 11 , 42 and 115 meet in the urban area of Sioux Falls . All other roads within the urban area are subordinate country roads, some unpaved roads and inner-city connecting roads.
In Sioux Falls several lines of different railway companies meet.
In the north of the urban area is the Sioux Falls Regional Airport . The nearest international airports are Eppley Airfield near Omaha (292 km south), Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport (375 km east-northeast) and Des Moines International Airport (465 km southeast).

A basketball team is based in Sioux Falls : the Sioux Falls Skyforce . The team plays in the since 2006 NBA Development League , a league structure of the NBA . Before that, the team competed in the Continental Basketball Association , where they won two CBA championships (1996 and 2005).
The Sioux Falls Stampede, an ice hockey team from the USHL junior league, is also based there.
The Sioux Falls Canaries are a professional baseball team and play in the North Division of the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball.
