Results
As of April 1, 1960, there were 179,323,175 people in the United States. The population grew by 18.5 percent compared to 1950. The most populous state was New York with 16.8 million inhabitants, the smallest Alaska with 228,000. This made New York the most populous state in a census for the last time, and California was already the state with the most inhabitants in the 1970 Zenus survey .
The state population figures from the 10-year United States censuses are key to determining the number of representatives from those states in the United States House of Representatives . The adjustment is usually made in the next but one Congress after a census.
