The 1970 United States Census was the 19th census in the United States since 1790 . It was carried out by the United States Census Bureau .
Results
As of April 1, 1970, there were 203,392,031 people in the United States. The population grew by 13.4 percent compared to 1960. The most populous state was California for the first time with 19.95 million inhabitants, the smallest Alaska with 302,173. California had replaced the state of New York as the most populous since the last census in 1960.
The state population figures from the 10-year United States censuses are key to determining the number of representatives from those states in the United States House of Representatives . The adjustment is usually made in the next but one Congress after a census.
