The NBA G-League , in short G-League or English G League called, is one of the National Basketball Association officially sponsored (NBA) and organized basketball organization , whose purpose is, in its gaming operations with " Farm Team " youth and spare players use time to so that they can then temporarily or permanently switch to the cadres of the clubs of the NBA. In 2012, almost a quarter of all NBA professionals had played at least once on a G-League team.
As part of a collaboration with the beverage manufacturer Gatorade , the league was originally to be renamed from the NBA Development League ( D-League ) to the NBA Gatorade League from the 2017/18 season . Shortly before the start of the season, NBA G-League was set as the official name.
history
The league started as the National Basketball Development League (NBDL) its game operations in the 2001/02 season with eight franchises , all of which were located in the southeastern United States. After four seasons, in March 2005, the NBA Commissioner David Stern presented a plan that should expand the D-League to 15 teams and turn it into a real minor league with a farm system, each with two NBA teams share a D-League team. As a result, the league was renamed the NBA Development League (D-League) and the teams were gradually distributed across the United States.
In the 2006/07 season they already played with twelve teams, with the Bakersfield Jam and Anaheim Arsenal settling the first two teams in southwestern California , as well as taking over four teams from the bankrupt Continental Basketball Association (CBA): the Dakota Wizards , Sioux Falls Skyforce , Idaho Stampede, and Colorado 14ers . With the Los Angeles D-Fenders , the first team was included that was completely owned by an NBA team or its owner. Since this season, the D-League All-Star Game has also been played as part of the NBA All-Star Weekend . The first all-star game in this context took place on February 17, 2007 at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas , Nevada, although in Las Vegas there is no NBA franchise and in the state of Nevada with the Reno Bighorns only a year later Franchise of the D-League was settled. In the 114: 100 victory of the selection of the East, the British Pops Mensah-Bonsu was named Most Valuable Player of the game.
From the 2008/09 season onwards the target strength of 16 teams planned at that time was reached. In the past, due to the expansion of the league and the associated higher costs, various franchises stopped playing or changed locations, which often only had short or medium-term success. Essentially, the Lakers / D-Fenders concept prevailed from 2012, whereby D-League franchises were taken over or founded directly or exclusive partnerships were agreed (so-called hybrid model). After the Utah Flash was taken over by the Philadelphia 76ers and returned to the D-League in 2013 as the Delaware 87ers , the previous target strength of 16 teams was exceeded for the first time. With the 2014 D-League champion, the Fort Wayne Mad Ants , there was the last independent team at the beginning of the 2014/15 season. In 2015 the Mad Ants were acquired by the Indiana Pacers . After the new Westchester Knicks were added for the 2014/15 season and two moves, the divisions were redistributed. The three divisions now became four, which were divided into two conferences following the example of the NBA.
With the Raptors 905 , the 19th franchise started playing in the NBA D-League from the 2015/16 season. The Toronto Raptors- affiliated crew is based in Mississauga , about 20 miles (32 kilometers) west of Toronto. Mainly the games will be played in the Hershey Center . There are also occasional games held at the Air Canada Center , the Toronto Raptors ' arena . The Raptors 905 are the first D-League team based outside the United States.
The league has grown steadily ever since. The goal was and is to assign a farm team to each of the 30 NBA teams. For the 2016/17 season, the league was increased to 22 teams with the Greensboro Swarm , the Windy City Bulls and the Long Island Nets . In the 2017/18 season, four teams joined again, based in Lakeland (Florida), Southaven (Mississippi), Ontario (California) and Oshkosh (Wisconsin). There was also a renaming of the league in NBA G-League and a reorganization of the divisions, which were increased to six. For the 2018/19 season, the Capital City Go-Go (Go-go is a local variant of funk ) was announced as a new team in Washington, DC and the Reno Bighorns relocated to Stockton under the name of the parent franchise. 2019/20 which attracted Erie BayHawks as College Park Skyhawks in Atlanta suburb of College to. The future New Orleans Pelicans farm team will be temporarily moving to Erie at the same time. Long term, it's set to be in Birmingham , Alabama . Before that, the Capitanes de Ciudad de México from Mexico City will join the league from the 2020/21 season. The team will not be assigned to an NBA team and the agreement will initially be limited to five years.
Player assignment
G-League players do not sign contracts with clubs, but with the league itself. A G-League team consists of twelve players, including ten (or fewer) G-League players and two (or more) NBA players -Professionals. The team consists of players from the previous season, players selected in the G-League Draft, assigned players (players assigned to a team with which they have a local connection. For example, players from the University of Texas the Austin Toros .), NBA players and a player who impressed in a local elimination.
An NBA player with less than four years of service can, for example, if there is a backlog of training or after a long injury, be posted to the G-League an unlimited number of times and reassigned just as often. Those NBA teams without their own G-League team can assign players using the Flexible Assignment System . If no team is ready to accept the players, they will be drawn to one of the five Hybrid Affiliate Teams (2018/19 the teams of the Celtics, Rockets, Heat, Mavericks and Pistons are hybrid affiliates ).
Many players who had been drafted or terminated by NBA teams began to play in the G-League and so it came about that many players from this development league soon got contracts with the NBA. The most famous and currently active NBA players who have made their way through the NBDL are Rafer Alston , Chris Andersen , Will Bynum , Matt Carroll , Smush Parker , Devin Brown and Bobby Simmons . In addition, many players recommended themselves for the associated NBA team due to their G-League stay. Well-known examples are Andray Blatche , JJ Barea , Marcin Gortat , Ramon Sessions , Jeremy Lin and Danny Green . German professionals are or were active in the G-League as well. These included and still include Tim Ohlbrecht , Elias Harris , Dennis Schröder , Tibor Pleiß , Paul Zipser , Isaiah Hartenstein , Isaac Bonga , Moritz Wagner and David Krämer .
For some time now, young college dropouts have also made it into the NBA draft via the G-League . Mike Taylor was the first player in the 2008 NBA draft to be drafted directly from the G-League. After him, only Latavious Williams (2010), Chukwudiebere Maduabum (2011), Glen Rice Jr. (2013), Thanasis Antetokounmpo and PJ Hairston (both 2014) were selected in the NBA draft. Hairston was the first G-League player to be selected in the first round of the draft and thus received a guaranteed NBA contract.
Two-way contracts
Each NBA team can assign two players with four or fewer years of service in the NBA to its own or contracted G-League team under the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). If more are allocated, the team must reduce the number of G-League players so that the maximum squad size of twelve players is retained. NBA teams can call players into the NBA for 45 days during the G-League season, excluding travel times (unlimited before the start of the season and after the end of the season), but players can only be sent to the G-League three times in a season. Contracts can be concluded for a maximum of two years, after which the player becomes a free agent . In addition to the $ 77,250 G-League maximum income, which will increase to $ 92,241 by 2024/25 (for comparison: a one-way player currently receives $ 35,000 in the 2019/20 season), the player receives a daily income the active list of an NBA team a daily rate of the NBA minimum wage, which was a little over a million for 170 days in 2018/19 . There are also expenses and subsistence allowance. The advantage should be that a two-way player in the G-League team can experience and experience the game system and culture of the associated NBA team and can thus be better embedded in the team structure.
