The Maine Red Claws are an American basketball team based in Portland , Maine and playing in the NBA G-League . They were the farming team of the Charlotte Hornets , Philadelphia 76ers, and Boston Celtics before being assigned to the Boston Celtics alone in 2012.
The team exists because the G-League continued to spread to Portland, Maine . On July 21, 2009, Austin Ainge became the team's first coach. There was a choice to choose the name of the team. Red Claws won ahead of Beacons , Crushers , Destroyers , Swarm and Traps .
For the first three years of the franchise's history , they failed to reach the championship play-offs . In the 2012/13 season, under their new coach Mike Taylor , who had previously worked in Germany for a long time, succeeded for the first time in the play-offs, in which they were eliminated in the first round.
