The South Bay Lakers (formerly Los Angeles D-Fenders ) are a team of NBA G-League , which in El Segundo ( California is home).

history

The farm team of the Los Angeles Lakers was the Los Angeles D-Fenders for the season 2006/07 new in the NBA Development League added. Since then, the D-Fenders have also been in the possession of the Los Angeles Lakers owner Jerry Buss, who died in 2013 . Both the logo and the colors of the team were modeled on those of the Lakers. The Lakers were the first team in the league to have an exclusive farm team in the NBA D-League .

In the beginning, the D-Fenders played their home games at the Staples Center in Los Angeles . The D-Fenders games were usually placed before the Lakers home games and tickets for a Lakers game were also valid for a D-Fenders home game. But mostly the hall stayed empty and the costs for the home games rose enormously. In order to build up new structures for the team, the D-Fenders did not appear during the 2010/11 season and did not take part in the game. The team returned to the league for the 2011/12 season and played its home games at the Toyota Sports Center until 2016/17 . This offered space for around 300 spectators at home games. The D-Fenders were able to successfully contest the season and made it to the finals of the play-offs. There they were defeated by the Austin Toros after victories with 1-2.

From 2012 to 2013 Reggie Theus was head coach of the team. His successor should initially be the former player Mark Madsen. However, Madsen was later appointed as an assistant coach to the Los Angeles Lakers. Head coach for the 2013/14 season was Robert MacKinnon . For the 2013/14 season, the German national player Elias Harris was also sent by the Los Angeles Lakers to the D-Fenders to collect match practice there.

After the season 2016/17 was the NBA Development League in NBA G-League (short G-League ) renamed and the LA D-Fenders in South Bay Lakers. Since the 2017/18 season, the UCLA Health Training Center has served as a home with a capacity of 750 spectators.
