The New Mexico State University (also NMSU called) is a public university in Las Cruces , New Mexico . In 2005, 26,400 students were enrolled at the university . The NMSU is particularly known for its research and teaching in the field of space travel .

In addition to its main campus in Las Cruces , the NMSU has branches in Alamogordo (2,000 students), Carlsbad (1,200 students) and Dona Ana, as well as an office in Albuquerque .

The university was founded in 1888 under the name New Mexico A&M College .
