Garrey Edward Carruthers (born August 29, 1939 in Alamosa , Colorado ) is an American politician . He was governor of the state of New Mexico from 1987 to 1991 .

Early years

Garrey Carruthers was born in Colorado and grew up in Aztec, New Mexico. There he studied agriculture at New Mexico State University until 1965. He then continued his studies until 1968 at Iowa State University . After completing this course, he taught agriculture at New Mexico State University.

Political career

Carruthers is a member of the Republican Party . Between 1974 and 1975 he worked for the US Department of Agriculture . From 1975 and 1978 he worked in New Mexico at the Institute for the Study of Water Resources in this country ( Water Resources Research Institute ). Between 1977 and 1979 he was also chairman of his party in New Mexico. After the election victory of Ronald Reagan and the associated takeover of the Republicans in Washington, Carruthers received a position in the US Department of the Interior between 1981 and 1984 .

In 1986 Garrey Carruthers was elected as the new governor of his state. He took up his new office on January 1, 1987. As a supporter of the death penalty , he reintroduced it to New Mexico. His predecessor, Toney Anaya , an opponent of the death penalty, had converted many death sentences into other sentences shortly before the end of his term in office. Otherwise his term of office passed without any special events.

Another résumé

After the end of his tenure, Carruthers was President and CEO of the “Cimmaron Health Plan” health insurance company between 1993 and 2003. Since June 2008, he has served on the board of directors of First State Bank Corporation , which operates primarily in New Mexico, Colorado, Utah and Arizona .
