William FM Arny

William Frederick Milton Arny (born March 6, 1813 in Washington, DC , † September 18, 1881 in Topeka , Kansas ) was an American politician and from 1865 to 1866 temporarily acting governor of the New Mexico Territory .

Early years

William Arny attended Bethany College in what is now West Virginia . After that he was secretary for some time to Alexander Campbell, a then well-known preacher. Over the years he met many of the most powerful and influential figures in the United States of the time. In 1850 he settled in McLean County , Illinois . There he was one of the founding members of the Republican Party . From 1857 he was resident in Anderson County , Kansas. In 1858 he was a member of the Kansas Constituent Assembly.

Political career

Also in 1858 he was elected to the Kansas House of Representatives. During these years he also managed the funds of an aid committee to overcome the consequences of a locust plague. In 1861, Arny was named Secretary of State in the New Mexico Territory by President Abraham Lincoln . In this capacity he had to temporarily represent the ailing Territorial Governor Henry Connelly . Even after his political office ended, he stayed in New Mexico, where he tried different business areas. The great financial success was denied him. William Arny died in Topeka in September 1881 on his way home from a visit to the east.
