William Taylor Thornton

William Taylor Thornton (born February 9, 1843 in Calhoun , Henry County , Missouri , † March 16, 1916 in Santa Fe , New Mexico ) was an American politician and governor of the New Mexico Territory from 1893 to 1897 .

Thornton served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War . After the war he lived temporarily in Missouri. There he was elected to the State House of Representatives in 1876 . After moving to the New Mexico Territory, he became a member of the Territorial Government Council there in 1880. In 1891 he was mayor of the city of Santa Fe and from 1893 to 1897 he was territorial governor of the area. After his death in 1916, he was buried in the Fairview Cemetery in Santa Fe.
