Lionel Allen Sheldon

Lionel Allen Sheldon (born August 30, 1828 in Worcester , Otsego County , New York , †  January 17, 1917 in Pasadena , California ) was an American politician and governor of the New Mexico Territory from 1881 to 1885 .

Career

As a child, Sheldon moved to Lagrange , Ohio with his parents . There he attended the local schools and later until 1850 Oberlin College . After studying law , he was admitted to the bar in 1853. He then practiced in Elyria, Ohio.

Lionel Sheldon was a member of the Republican Party . Between 1856 and 1857 he was a probate judge in Lorain County . In 1856, 1880 and 1896 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention . Under Governor Salmon P. Chase , he became Brigadier General of the State Militia. During the American Civil War he rose to the rank of Colonel in the Union Army .

During the war he set up as a lawyer in occupied New Orleans . Until 1879 he practiced this profession in this city, when he was not doing his political duties. Because he was also a member of the US House of Representatives in Washington between 1869 and 1875 . In 1881 he was named the new Territorial Governor of New Mexico. He held this office between 1881 and 1885. Between 1885 and 1887 he was one of the bankruptcy trustees ( receiver ) of the Texas and Pacific Railway .

In 1888 Sheldon moved first to Los Angeles , then to Pasadena, California, where he again worked as a lawyer. He also died in Pasadena in January 1917.
