John E. Leonard

John Edwards Leonard (born September 22, 1845 in Fairville , Chester County , Pennsylvania , †  March 15, 1878 in Havana , Cuba ) was an American politician . Between 1877 and 1878 he represented the state of Louisiana in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Leonard was a great-nephew of John Edwards (1786-1843), who had represented the state of Pennsylvania in Congress between 1839 and 1843 . He attended the public schools of his home country and then until 1863 the Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter ( New Hampshire ). He then studied to 1867 at Harvard University . After studying law in Germany and being admitted to the bar in 1870, he began to work in his new profession in Monroe (Louisiana). In 1871 and 1872 Leonard was a district attorney in the 13th judicial district of his state. In 1876 he became an associate judge on the Louisiana Supreme Court . In the meantime he worked as a lawyer.

Politically, Leonard became a member of the Republican Party . In the congressional election of 1876 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the fifth constituency of Louisiana , where he succeeded William B. Spencer on March 4, 1877 . However, he could not end his legislative term in Congress, which actually ran until March 3, 1879 , because he died on March 15, 1878. John Leonard was buried in Middletown, Pennsylvania.
