George Eustis

George Eustis Jr. (born September 28, 1828 in New Orleans , Louisiana , †  March 15, 1872 in Cannes , France ) was an American politician . Between 1855 and 1859 he represented the state of Louisiana in the US House of Representatives .

Career

George Eustis was the older brother of US Senator James B. Eustis (1834-1899). He first attended Jefferson College in Louisiana. After a subsequent law degree at Harvard University and his admission to the bar, he began to work in his new profession in New Orleans. Politically, he became a member of the American Party .

In the congressional election of 1854 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first constituency of Louisiana . There he succeeded the Democrat Wiliam Dunbar on March 4, 1855 . After a re-election in 1856, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until March 3, 1859 . These were shaped by the events and discussions leading up to the civil war .

During the war, George Eustice joined the Confederation . He became secretary to the former US Senator John Slidell and has since become a prisoner of war. After his release, Eustis became secretary at the Confederate Mission in Paris . After the end of the civil war and the defeat of the Confederates, he stayed in France. He was later tasked with negotiating a postal treaty between France and the United States.

George Eustis died on March 15, 1872 in Cannes and was buried in the American capital Washington. He was married to Louise Morris Corcoran (1838-1867), with whom he had three children.
