Charles J. Boatner

Charles Jahleal Boatner (born January 23, 1849 in Columbia , Louisiana , †  March 21, 1903 in New Orleans , Louisiana) was an American politician . Between 1889 and 1897 he represented the state of Louisiana in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Charles Boatner attended public schools in his home country. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1870, he began to work in this profession. At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1876 and 1878 he was a member of the Louisiana Senate .

In the congressional election of 1888 Boatner was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fifth constituency of Louisiana , where he succeeded Cherubusco Newton on March 4, 1889 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1895 . He was also re-elected in 1894 and took up another term in the House of Representatives on March 4, 1895. However, the election was contested. On March 20, 1896, Congress declared the seat vacant and ordered new elections. Boatner won this and was able to take his seat again on June 10, 1896. He remained a member of Congress until the end of the legislative period on March 3, 1897.

In 1896 Boatner declined to run again. He moved to New Orleans and went back to work as a lawyer. He also died in this city on March 21, 1903.
