Josiah Stoddard Johnston (born November 24, 1784 in Salisbury , Essex County , Massachusetts , †  May 19, 1833 on the Red River , Louisiana ) was an American politician who represented the state of Louisiana in both chambers of Congress .

Originally from New England , Josiah Johnston moved to Kentucky with his father in 1788 but then went to school in Connecticut . He graduated from Transylvania University in Lexington in 1802 before studying law , being admitted to the bar, and practicing in Alexandria , which was then in the Orleans Territory . From 1805 to 1812 he was a member of the territorial parliament.

During the British-American War of 1812 Johnston set up a regiment to defend New Orleans ; however, he did not reach the city with his men until the battle was over. As a result, he worked in agriculture and until 1821 as a district judge. On March 4 of that year he entered the House of Representatives of the United States as a representative of the Democratic Republican Party , where he remained until March 3, 1823. When trying to be re-elected, he failed because of Edward Livingston .

On January 15, 1824, Johnston returned to Congress. He succeeded the resigned US Senator James Brown , where he also won the following election in 1825 after his appointment by the governor ; In 1831 it was confirmed again. At that time he was a member of the National Republican Party . In the Senate he was from 1826 to 1827 before the trade committee .

Josiah Johnston was killed on May 19, 1833 in the explosion of the steamship Lioness on the Red River. He was buried in Pineville .
