Edwin Sidney Broussard I (born December 4, 1874 in Loreauville , Iberia Parish , Louisiana , † November 19, 1934 in New Iberia , Louisiana) was an American politician who represented the state of Louisiana in the United States Senate.

Early years

Edwin Broussard was born in the village of Loreauville, southern Louisiana, and attended a public school. After graduating from Louisiana State University in 1896, he taught at a public school from 1896 to 1898.

When the Spanish-American War broke out, Broussard volunteered for military service, after which he served in Cuba (1898-1899) and the Philippines (1899). In 1900 he returned to the United States and graduated from Tulane University in New Orleans with a law degree in 1901 . Broussard married Marie Patout on June 5, 1904. The couple had a total of six children.

He was admitted to the bar in 1901 and began practicing in New Iberia that same year. From 1903 to 1908 he served as the district attorney in the 19th judicial district of Louisiana.

Political career

Edwin Broussard first applied for a political office in 1916, but missed the election to lieutenant governor of Louisiana. In 1920 he was elected to the US Senate as a member of the Democratic Party . There he took the place of his recently ill brother Robert F. Broussard . In 1926 he was re-elected, despite fierce opposition from the Ku Klux Klan , who rejected Broussard because he was a Roman Catholic . Broussard was a Senator from March 5, 1921 to March 3, 1933.
