Robert C. Nicholas

Robert Carter Nicholas (* 1793 in Hanover , Hanover County , Virginia ; †  December 24, 1857 in Terrebonne Parish , Louisiana ) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ) who represented the state of Louisiana in the US Senate .

Robert Nicholas, whose father George was the first law professor at Transylvania University and a member of the Virginia House of Representatives , first embarked on a military career. During the British-American War he served as a captain and later as a major . He then attended the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg , before he moved to Louisiana in 1820 and became a planter in Terrebonne Parish.

After the resignation of Charles Gayarré , who was to succeed George A. Waggaman, who was fatally injured in a duel, in the US Senate, Robert Nicholas decided the following by-election for himself. He entered Congress on January 13, 1836 and remained there until March 3, 1841. His uncle Wilson Cary Nicholas had been a representative of Virginia's senator from 1799 to 1804. From 1843 until his resignation in 1846, Nicholas held the office of Secretary of State of Louisiana before he retired to his plantation.
