John Leigh "Jay" Dardenne Jr. (born February 6, 1954 in Baton Rouge , Louisiana ) is an American politician . From 2010 to 2016 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Louisiana. Dardenne has been Commissioner of Administration since John Bel Edwards took office as Governor .

Career

Jay Dardenne attended Baton Rouge High School and then studied journalism at Louisiana State University . After completing a law degree at the same university and being admitted to the bar in 1979, he began to work in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . In 1987 he ran unsuccessfully for the Louisiana Senate . From 1989 to 1991 he was a member of the Baton Rouge City Council. Between 1992 and 2006 he was a member of the State Senate. He then held the post of Secretary of State of Louisiana until 2010 .

In 2010 Dardenne was elected lieutenant governor of his state in a special election. A year later he was confirmed in the regular election on the side of Bobby Jindal . He is thus Deputy Governor .

In 2015, Dardenne was elected to succeed Jindal in the governorship. In the first round (a so-called jungle primary, in which candidates from all parties compete together and the two with the strongest vote compete against each other regardless of party affiliation) on October 24, 2015, after the Democrat John Bel Edwards (40 percent), he received the Republican US Senator David Vitter (23 percent) and the former Republican Lieutenant Governor Scott Angelle (19 percent) achieved the fourth-best result with around 15 percent of the vote, so they missed the second round. Dardenne spoke out in favor of the election of the Democrat Edwards in early November, which led to outraged reactions from many party friends. His tenure as Lieutenant Governor ended on January 11, 2016, and Billy Nungesser succeeded him. Dardenne took office as Commissioner of Administration .

Dardenne is a member of several organizations and associations.

Dardenne has two children with his wife Catherine.
