Albert Voorhies

Albert Voorhies (* 1829 , † 1913 ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1864 and 1866 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Louisiana under the military administration of the Union Forces .

Career

Albert Voorhies was born the son of a judge in 1829 and graduated from St. Charles College . He later studied at Transylvania University until 1847 . After studying law and becoming a lawyer, he began to work in this profession. After his father's death in 1859, he took his position as a judge at the Louisiana Supreme Court . Towards the end of the Civil War he became a member of the Republican Party .

After the lieutenant governor of the Union-controlled part of the state of Louisiana James Madison Wells moved up to the new governor, replacing the resigned George Michael Hahn , Voorhies became the new lieutenant governor. He held this office between 1864 and 1866. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . He then returned to legal practice. In 1884 and 1886 he was a member of his state's health committee. He was then in 1887 and 1888 a judge at the District Court in New Orleans . He died in 1913.
