WA Robertson

William Allen Robertson (born October 22, 1837 in Southington , Hartford County , Connecticut , †  October 26, 1889 in Washington , Louisiana ) was an American politician . Between October and December 1881 he was acting lieutenant governor of the state of Louisiana.

Career

At an unknown time before 1860, William Robertson came to Louisiana. After studying medicine and being admitted to the bar in 1860, he began practicing this profession in Opelousas . During the Civil War , he served in various medical positions in the Confederation Army from 1861 to 1865 . After the war he worked as a doctor and farmer in St. Landry Parish . Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party . In the presidential election of 1876 he supported the narrowly defeated Democratic candidate Samuel J. Tilden . He also attempted a bribe in his favor. Between 1880 and 1884 he sat in the Louisiana State Senate , the President Pro Tempore , he was in the 1881st

After the death of Governor Louis A. Wiltz , his deputy Samuel D. McEnery took over his office. According to the state constitution, the President Pro Tempore of the State Senate, William Robertson, was promoted to acting lieutenant governor. He held this office between October 16 and December 24, 1881. He became the official chairman of the State Senate. Since he lost the post of President Pro Tempore , his legal basis for the office of lieutenant governor, on December 24th, he also had to give up the office of lieutenant governor, which fell to his successor in both offices, George L. Walton . Robertson remained State Senator until 1884. He died on October 26, 1889.
