The St. Landry Parish ( French Paroisse de Saint-Landry ) is a parish in the state of Louisiana in the United States . At the 2010 census , the Parish had 83,384 residents and a population density of 34.7 people per square kilometer. The administrative seat ( Parish Seat ) is Opelousas .

St. Landry Parish was formed in 1807 as one of the 19 original parishes. It was named after Landericus of Paris (French: St. Landry ).

According to the 2000 census , St. Landry Parish had 87,700 people in 32,328 households and 23,211 families. The population density was 36 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 56.51 percent white, 42.13 percent African American, 0.14 percent Native American, 0.20 percent Asian, 0.01 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.31 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.70 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 0.91 percent of the population.

The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.21.

In relation to the entire Parish, the population consisted of 29.5 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 9.2 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 26.5 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 21.4 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 13.4 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 91.6 males. For every 100 women aged 18 years or older, there were 86.8 men.

The median income for a household in the 22,855 USD , and the median income for a family was 28,908 USD. Males had a median income of $ 29,458 versus $ 18,473 for females. The per capita income was $ 12,042. 24.7 percent of families and 29.3 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
