The Lafourche Parish ( French Paroisse de LaFourche ) is a Parish in the state of Louisiana in the United States . At the 2010 census , the Parish had 96,318 residents and a population density of 34.1 people per square kilometer. The administrative seat ( Parish Seat ) is Thibodaux .
geography
The Parish is located in southeast Louisiana on the Gulf of Mexico and has an area of 3813 square kilometers, of which 1004 square kilometers are water.
Lafourche Parish is located in the southwestern part of the Mississippi Estuary . The Parish is criss-crossed by numerous bayous , the largest of which is Bayou Lafourche . This tributary of the Mississippi flows through the entire Parish from north to south and flows into the Gulf of Mexico at Port Fourchon .

history
The Lafourche Parish was formed in 1807 as one of the 19 original parishes. Until 1812 the name was Interior Parish , then until 1853 Lafourche Interior Parish .
One building in the Parish has the status of a National Historic Landmark due to its historical significance , the Edward Douglass White House , in which the politician and judge Edward Douglass White junior lived. A total of 35 buildings and sites in the Parish are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of November 5, 2017).

According to the 2000 census , there were 89,974 people in 32,057 households and 24,299 families in Lafourche Parish. The population density was 32 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 82.85 percent white, 12.61 percent African American, 2.30 percent Native American, 0.67 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.58 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.97 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 1.43 percent of the population.
Of the 32,057 households, 37.8 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 59.1 percent were married couples living together, 12.4 percent were single mothers, 24.2 percent were non-families, 19.6 percent were single households, and 7.8 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.75 and the average family size was 3.17.
In relation to the entire Parish, the population was composed of 27.3 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 10.5 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 29.7 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 21.3 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 11.3 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 95.2 males. For every 100 women aged 18 years or over, there were 91.3 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 34,910 , and the median income for a family is $ 40,504. Males had a median income of $ 34,600 versus $ 19,484 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,809. 13.2 percent of families and 16.5 percent of the population are below the poverty line. Of these, 21.9 percent were children or adolescents under the age of 18 and 18.3 percent were people over 65 years of age.
