The Morehouse Parish ( French Paroisse de Morehouse ) is a parish in the state of Louisiana in the United States . At the 2010 census , the Parish had 27,979 residents and a population density of 13.6 people per square kilometer. The administrative seat ( Parish Seat ) is Bastrop .
geography
The Parish is located in northern Louisiana, bordering Arkansas , about 40 kilometers to the east from Mississippi and has an area of 2085 square kilometers, of which 28 square kilometers are water. It borders the following parishes and counties:

history
Morehouse Parish was formed in 1844 from parts of the Carroll Parish and the Ouachita Parish. It was named after Abraham Morehouse , one of the region's first white settlers.
Nine structures and sites in the Parish are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of November 7, 2017).

According to the 2000 census , Morehouse Parish had 31,021 people; 11,382 households and 8,320 families were counted. The population density was 15 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 55.76 percent white, 43.36 percent African American, 0.13 percent Native American, 0.18 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.12 percent from other ethnic groups Groups. 0.44 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 0.74 percent of the population.
Of the 11,382 households, 33.3 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 49.1 percent were married couples living together, 19.8 percent were single mothers, 26.9 percent were non-families, 24.4 percent were single households and 11.6 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.64 and the average family size was 3.14.
In relation to the entire Parish, the population consisted of 27.5 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 9.5 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 26.4 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 21.4 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 15.1 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 91.4 males. For every 100 women aged 18 years or over, there were 86.1 men.
The median income for a household in the city was $ 25,124 , and the median income for a family was $ 31,358. Males had a median income of $ 31,385 versus $ 18,474 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,197. 21.3 percent of families and 26.8 percent of the population are below the poverty line. These included 35.9 percent of children and adolescents under the age of 18 and 23.8 percent of people aged 65 and over.
