The Grant Parish ( French : Paroisse de Grant ) is a parish in the state of Louisiana in the United States . In 2010, the Parish had 22,309 residents and a population density of 13.4 people per square kilometer. The Parish Seat is Colfax , named after Vice-President Schuyler Colfax .

The Parish is located in north-central Louisiana, about 100 km to the east and west of Mississippi and Texas , and has an area of 1721 square kilometers, of which 50 square kilometers are water. It borders on the following parishes:

Grant Parish was formed in 1869 from parts of Rapides Parish and Winn Parish. It was named after the US President Ulysses S. Grant .

Four buildings in the parish are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of November 4, 2017).

According to the 2000 census , there were 18,698 people in 7,073 households and 5,276 families in Grant Parish. The population density was 11 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 85.43 percent white, 11.88 percent African American, 0.89 percent Native American, 0.14 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.36 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.28 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 1.14 percent of the population.

Of the 7,073 households, 36.5 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 57.2 percent were married couples living together, 12.9 percent were single mothers, 25.4 percent were non-families, 22.6 percent were single households and 10.1 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.61 and the average family size was 3.06.

In relation to the entire Parish, the population was composed of 28.3 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 7.9 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 28.1 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 23.0 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 12.7 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 96.1 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over, there were 93.0 men.

The median income for a household in the 29,622 USD , and the median income for a family was 34,878 USD. Males had a median income of $ 31,235 versus $ 20,470 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,410. 16.9 percent of families and 21.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
