geography

The Parish is located in the extreme southwest of Louisiana, bordered by the Gulf of Mexico to the south and Texas to the west . It has an area of ​​5003 square kilometers, of which 1602 square kilometers are water.

The Calcasieu River flows through the center of the Parish until it flows into the Gulf of Mexico. The western border of the Parish with Texas is formed by the mouth of the Sabine River .

The Cameron Parish was formed in 1870 from parts of the Calcasieu Parish. It was named after Simon Cameron (1799–1889), a US Senator and US Secretary of War from Pennsylvania . On June 27, 1957, large parts of the Parish were devastated by Hurricane Audrey . 390 people died. On September 24, 2005, Hurricane Rita devastated larger areas again.

According to the 2010 census , there were 6,839 people in 2,482 households in Cameron County. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. Statistically, there were 2.78 people each in the 2,482 households.
