The Vernon Parish ( French Paroisse de Vernon ) is a parish in the state of Louisiana in the United States . In 2010 the parish had 52,334 residents and a population density of 15.2 people per square kilometer. The Parish Seat is Leesville .

The Parish is in western Louisiana and borders the Sabine River , which forms the border with Texas . Vernon Parish has an area of 3,474 square kilometers, of which 34 square kilometers are water. It borders the following parishes and counties:

The Vernon Parish was formed in 1871 from parts of the Natchitoches Parish, the Rapides Parish and the Sabine Parish.

According to the 2000 census , Vernon Parish had 52,531 people in 18,260 households and 13,713 families. The population density was 15 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 73.70 percent white, 17.06 percent African American, 1.46 percent Native American, 1.58 percent Asian, 0.30 percent from the Pacific island area and 2.50 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 3.40 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 5.92 percent of the population.

Of the 18,260 households, 42.3 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 61.2 percent were married couples living together, 10.7 percent were single mothers, 24.9 percent were non-families, 22.0 percent were single households and 7.3 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.69 and the average family size was 3.15.

In relation to the entire Parish, the population was composed of 29.1 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 14.7 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 31.4 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 16.8 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 7.9 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 28 years. For every 100 females there were 109.3 males. For every 100 women aged 18 years or over, there were 109.7 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 31,216 , and the median income for a family is $ 34,680. Males had a median income of $ 26,451 versus $ 20,417 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,036. 12.2 percent of families and 15.3 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 18.6 percent were children or adolescents under the age of 18 and 14.8 percent were people over 65 years of age.
