The Red River Parish ( French Paroisse de la Rivière-Rouge ) is a parish in the US state of Louisiana . At the 2010 census , the parish had 9,091 inhabitants and a population density of 9 people per square kilometer. The Parish Seat is Coushatta .

The Parish is located almost in the extreme northwest of Louisiana, is about 50 km to the west from Texas , about 80 km to the north from Arkansas and has an area of 1041 square kilometers, of which 33 square kilometers are water surface; largest river is the Red River . It borders on the following parishes:

history

Red River Parish was formed in 1871 from parts of Bienville Parish, Bossier Parish, Caddo Parish, and Natchitoches Parish. It was named after the river of the same name on which the county is located.

Three buildings in the parish are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of November 9, 2017).

According to the 2000 census , the Red River Parish had 9,622 people in 3,414 households and 2,526 families. The population density was 10 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 57.87 percent white, 40.91 percent African American, 0.28 percent Native American, 0.09 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.22 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.61 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 1.01 percent of the population.

Of the 3,414 households, 35.7 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 51.5 percent were married couples living together, 18.6 percent were single mothers, 26.0 percent were non-families, 23.1 percent were single households and 11.5 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.74 and the average family size was 3.23.

In relation to the entire Parish, the population was composed of 30.1 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 9.3 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 24.8 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 21.5 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 14.4 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 90.8 males. For every 100 women aged 18 years or over, there were 85.4 men.

The median income for a household in the 23,153 USD , and the median income for a family was 27,870 USD. Males had a median income of $ 27,132 versus $ 17,760 for females. The per capita income was $ 12,119. 26.0 percent of families, 29.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 40.1 percent were children or adolescents under the age of 18 and 18.9 percent were people over 65 years of age.
