The Terrebonne Parish ( French Paroisse de Terrebonne ) is a parish in the state of Louisiana in the United States . In 2010, the parish had 111,680 residents and a population density of 34.4 people per square kilometer. The Parish Seat is Houma .

The Parish is located in the southeast of Louisiana, borders the Gulf of Mexico in the south and has an area of 5387 square kilometers, of which 2137 square kilometers are water. It borders on the following parishes:

history

The Terrebonne Parish was formed in 1822 from parts of the Lafourche Parish. The name Terrebonne comes from French and means something like good land .

According to the 2000 census , the Terrebonne Parish had 104,503 people in 35,997 households and 27,393 families. The population density was 32 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 74.07 percent white, 17.79 percent African American, 5.29 percent Native American, 0.81 percent Asian, 0.02 percent Pacific islander and 0.54 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.48 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 1.56 percent of the population.

Of the 35,997 households, 39.2 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 57.0 percent were married couples living together, 14.1 percent were single mothers, 23.9 percent were non-families, 19.3 percent were single households and 7.3 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.86 and the average family size was 3.29 people.

In relation to the entire Parish, the population was composed of 29.2 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 10.1 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 29.8 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 21.1 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 9.7 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 96.6 males. For every 100 women aged 18 years or over, there were 94.1 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 35,235 , and the median income for a family is $ 39,912. Males had a median income of $ 34,869 versus $ 20,705 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,051. 15.8 percent of families and 19.1 percent of the population are below the poverty line. Of these, 25.9 percent were children or adolescents under the age of 18 and 17.6 percent were people over 65 years of age.
