The Terrebonne Parish ( French Paroisse de Terrebonne ) is a parish in the state of Louisiana in the United States . In 2010, the parish had 111,680 residents and a population density of 34.4 people per square kilometer. The Parish Seat is Houma .

The Parish is located in the southeast of Louisiana, borders the Gulf of Mexico in the south and has an area of ​​5387 square kilometers, of which 2137 square kilometers are water. It borders on the following parishes:

history

The Terrebonne Parish was formed in 1822 from parts of the Lafourche Parish. The name Terrebonne comes from French and means something like good land .

According to the 2000 census , the Terrebonne Parish had 104,503 people in 35,997 households and 27,393 families. The population density was 32 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 74.07 percent white, 17.79 percent African American, 5.29 percent Native American, 0.81 percent Asian, 0.02 percent Pacific islander and 0.54 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.48 percent were descended from two or more races.
