The Iberia Parish ( French : Paroisse de l'Ibérie ) is a Parish in the state of Louisiana in the United States . At the 2010 census , the Parish had 73,240 residents and a population density of 49.2 people per square kilometer. The Parish Seat is New Iberia .

The Parish is located in southern Louisiana, bordering the Gulf of Mexico and has an area of 2670 square kilometers, of which 1180 square kilometers are water. It borders on the following parishes:

history
Iberia Parish was formed on October 30, 1868 from parts of St. Martin Parish and St. Mary Parish. It was named after the country of origin of most of the settlers at the time, the Iberian Peninsula .
A Parish mansion has the status of a National Historic Landmark , Shadows-on-the-Teche , due to its historical significance . A total of 31 structures and sites in the Parish are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of November 4, 2017).

According to the 2000 census , Iberia Parish had 73,266 people in 25,381 households and 19,162 families. The population density was 49 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 65.08 percent white, 30.81 percent African American, 0.31 percent Native American, 1.93 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.60 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.25 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 1.50 percent of the population.
Of the 25,381 households, 39.5 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 53.2 percent were married couples living together, 17.2 percent were single mothers, 24.5 percent were non-families, 21.1 percent were single households and 8.7 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.82 and the average family size was 3.28.
In relation to the entire Parish, the population consisted of 30.0 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 9.6 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 28.4 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 20.6 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 11.4 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 92.8 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were 89.8 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 31,204 , and the median income for a family is $ 36,017. Males had a median income of $ 32,399 versus $ 18,174 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,145. 20.2 percent of families and 23.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 31.5 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 20.2 percent were people over 65 years of age.
