The St. John the Baptist Parish ( French Paroisse de Saint-Jean-Baptiste ) is a Parish in the state of Louisiana in the United States . In 2000, the Parish had 45,924 residents and a population density of 81 people per square kilometer. The Parish Seat is Edgard .

The Parish is located in the southeast of Louisiana, is about 80 km to the east and south of the Gulf of Mexico and has an area of ​​901 square kilometers, of which 334 square kilometers are water. It borders on the following parishes:

history

St. John the Baptist Parish was formed in 1807 as one of the 19 original parishes.

Two buildings of the Parish have the status of a National Historic Landmark due to their historical significance , the San Francisco Plantation House and the Evergreen Plantation . A total of 16 buildings and sites in the Parish are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of November 10, 2017).

According to the 2000 census , St. John the Baptist Parish had 43,044 people in 14,283 households and 11,312 families. The population density was 76 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 52.58 percent white, 44.76 percent African American, 0.26 percent Native American, 0.53 percent Asian, 0.03 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.86 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.98 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.86 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups.

Of the 14,283 households, 43.0 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 56.1 percent were married couples living together, 18.1 percent were single mothers, 20.8 percent were non-families, 17.5 percent were single households and 6.0 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.98 and the average family size was 3.38 people.

In relation to the entire Parish, the population was composed of 31.2 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 9.7 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 30.2 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 21.1 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 7.8 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 32 years. Statistically, for every 100 females there were 94.3 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were 90.7 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 39,456 , and the median income for a family is $ 43,925. Males had a median income of $ 37,293 versus $ 22,323 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,445. 13.9 percent of families and 16.7 percent of the population are below the poverty line. Of these, 21.7 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 17.8 percent were people over 65 years of age.
