The Tensas Parish ( French Paroisse des Tensas ) is a Parish in the state of Louisiana in the United States . In 2010, the Parish had 5,252 residents and a population density of 3.4 residents per square kilometer. The Parish Seat is Saint Joseph .

The Parish is located in northeast Louisiana and is bordered to the east by the Mississippi River , which forms the border with the state of Mississippi . Tensas Parish has an area of ​​1661 square kilometers, of which 100 square kilometers are water. It borders the following parishes and counties:

According to the 2000 census , Tensas Parish had 6,618 people in 2,416 households and 1,635 families. The population density was 4 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 43.43 percent white, 55.38 percent African American, 0.05 percent Native American, 0.12 percent Asian and 0.29 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.74 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 1.25 percent of the population.

Of the 2,416 households, 30.0 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 43.1 percent were married couples living together, 20.2 percent were single mothers, 32.3 percent were non-families, 29.3 percent were single households and 14.9 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.14.

In relation to the entire Parish, the population was composed of 26.5 percent residents under 18 years of age, 10.0 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 25.1 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 22.9 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 15.5 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 37 years. Statistically, for every 100 females there were 97.8 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were 96.2 men.

The median income for a household in the city was $ 19,799 , and the median income for a family was $ 25,739. Males had a median income of $ 26,636 versus $ 16,781 for females. The per capita income was $ 12,622. 30.0 percent of families and 36.3 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 48.2 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 29.6 percent were people over 65 years of age.
