The Ouachita Parish ( French : Paroisse d'Ouachita ) is a Parish in the state of Louisiana in the United States . At the 2010 census , the Parish had 153,720 residents and a population density of 97.2 people per square kilometer. The Parish Seat is Monroe .

The Parish is located in northern Louisiana, about 40 km from Arkansas and has an area of 1639 square kilometers, of which 57 square kilometers are water. The Ouachita River flows through the Parish . It borders on the following parishes:

history
Ouachita Parish is home to several of the oldest known structures in North America, mounds from the middle archaic period . The Watson Brake sites south of the city of Monroe and Frenchman's Bend north are among the most complex earthworks of this era.
The Ouachita Parish was formed in 1807 as one of the 19 original parishes. The Parish was named after the Indian tribe of the Ouachita named.
From the original Ouachita Parish, parts were separated several times from which the Parish Morehouse , Union , Caldwell , Franklin , Tensas and Madison as well as East and West Carroll emerged.

According to the 2000 census , Ouachita Parish had a population of 147,250. Of these, 4,965 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 55,216 households and 38,319 families. The population density was 93 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 64.48 percent white, 33.63 percent African American, 0.23 percent Native American, 0.64 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.33 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.67 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 1.19 percent of the population.
Of the 55,216 households, 34.2 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 47.7 percent were married couples living together, 17.9 percent were single mothers, 30.6 percent were non-families, 25.8 percent were single households and 9.3 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 3.12.
In relation to the entire Parish, the population was composed of 27.9 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 12.0 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 27.9 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 20.3 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 11.8 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 89.3 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were 84.5 men.
The median income for a household in the 32,047 US dollars , and the median income for a family was 40,206 USD. Males had a median income of $ 31,616 versus $ 23,139 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,084. 15.8 percent of families and 20.7 percent of the population are below the poverty line. Of these, 29.7 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 15.8 percent were people over 65 years of age.
