The Madison Parish ( French : Paroisse de Madison ) is a parish in the state of Louisiana in the United States . At the 2010 census , the Parish had 12,093 inhabitants and a population density of 7.5 people per square kilometer. The Parish Seat is Tallulah .

The Parish is located almost in the extreme northeast of Louisiana and is bordered to the east by the Mississippi River , which forms the border with the state of Mississippi . Madison Parish is about 45 km north of Arkansas and has an area of ​​1685 square kilometers, of which 69 square kilometers are water. It borders the following parishes and counties:

history

James Madison

Madison Parish was formed in 1838 from parts of the Concordia Parish. It was named after James Madison (1751-1836), the fourth President of the USA.

Fifteen buildings and sites in the Parish are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of November 7, 2017).

According to the 2000 census , Madison Parish had 13,728 people in 4,469 households and 3,141 families. The population density was 8 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 37.86 percent white, 60.34 percent African American, 0.15 percent Native American, 0.16 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.35 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.13 percent were descended from two or more races.
