The Madison Parish ( French : Paroisse de Madison ) is a parish in the state of Louisiana in the United States . At the 2010 census , the Parish had 12,093 inhabitants and a population density of 7.5 people per square kilometer. The Parish Seat is Tallulah .

The Parish is located almost in the extreme northeast of Louisiana and is bordered to the east by the Mississippi River , which forms the border with the state of Mississippi . Madison Parish is about 45 km north of Arkansas and has an area of 1685 square kilometers, of which 69 square kilometers are water. It borders the following parishes and counties:

history

James Madison

Madison Parish was formed in 1838 from parts of the Concordia Parish. It was named after James Madison (1751-1836), the fourth President of the USA.

Fifteen buildings and sites in the Parish are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of November 7, 2017).

According to the 2000 census , Madison Parish had 13,728 people in 4,469 households and 3,141 families. The population density was 8 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 37.86 percent white, 60.34 percent African American, 0.15 percent Native American, 0.16 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.35 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.13 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 2.10 percent of the population.

Of the 4,469 households, 35.4 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 41.2 percent were married couples living together, 24.2 percent were single mothers, 29.7 percent were non-families, 26.6 percent were single households, and 11.0 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.74 and the average family size was 3.35 people.

In relation to the entire Parish, the population was composed of 32.6 percent residents under 18 years of age, 11.2 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 25.5 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 19.1 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 11.6 percent were 65 years of age or over. The average age was 30 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 103.3 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were 95.6 men.

The median income for a household in the 20,509 US dollars , and the median income for a family was 23,589 USD. Males had a median income of $ 26,394 versus $ 16,141 for females. The per capita income was $ 10,114. 29.7 percent of families and 36.7 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 51.6 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 22.0 percent were people over 65 years of age.
