The St. James Parish ( French Paroisse de Saint-Jacques ) is a parish in the state of Louisiana in the United States . In 2010, the Parish had 22,102 residents and a population density of 34.6 people per square kilometer. The Parish Seat is Convent .
geography
The Parish is located in southeast Louisiana, about 80 km from the Gulf of Mexico in the south and has an area of 668 square kilometers, of which 30 square kilometers are water. It borders on the following parishes:

history
St. James Parish was formed on March 31, 1807 as one of the 19 original parishes. It was named after James , one of the twelve apostles of Jesus. At the time of formation, St. James was the district capital on the west bank of the Mississippi River . In 1869 the seat was moved to today's convent.
The listed Judge Poché Plantation House was built in 1867.
A building in the Parish has the status of a National Historic Landmark , the Oak Alley Plantation , due to its historical significance . In addition to the Judge Poché Plantation House, a total of 21 other buildings and sites in the Parish are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of November 10, 2017).

According to the 2000 census , St. James Parish had 21,216 people in 6,992 households and 5,551 families. The population density was 33 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 49.99 percent white, 49.38 percent African American, 0.09 percent Native American, 0.05 percent Asian and 0.12 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.37 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 0.61 percent of the population.
Of the 6,992 households, 38.9 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 55.3 percent were married couples living together, 19.3 percent were single mothers, 20.6 percent were non-families, 18.4 percent were single households and 7.7 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 3.00 and the average family size was 3.43.
In relation to the entire Parish, the population was composed of 29.5 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 9.8 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 28.1 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 21.4 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 11.1 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 93.1 males. For every 100 women aged 18 years or over, there were 89.4 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 35,277 , and the median income for a family is $ 41,751. Males had a median income of $ 37,487 versus $ 21,712 for females. The per capita income was 14,381. 20.7 percent of the population and 18.0 percent of families are below the poverty line. Of these, 27.7 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 15.1 percent were people over 65 years of age.
