The Assumption Parish ( French Paroisse de l'Assomption ) is a Parish in the state of Louisiana in the United States . At the 2010 census , the Parish had 23,421 residents and a population density of 26.7 people per square kilometer. The administrative seat ( Parish Seat ) is Napoleonville , named after JL Napoleon, a local plantation owner.
geography
The Parish is located in southeast Louisiana and is about 50 km from the Gulf of Mexico in the southwest . It has an area of 944 square kilometers, of which 67 square kilometers are water.
To the west, the Parish is bounded by the Belle River , a tributary of the Atchafalaya , an estuary of the Mississippi . Lake Verret is not far from the Belle River . The Bayou Lafourche , which was once another branch of the Mississippi River, runs through the east of Assumption Parish .

The Assumption Parish was formed on March 31, 1807 as one of the 19 original parishes. It was named after a local parish.
