The St. Tammany Parish ( French Paroisse de Saint-Tammany ) is a parish in the state of Louisiana in the United States . In 2010, the Parish had 233,740 residents and a population density of 154.5 people per square kilometer. The Parish Seat is Covington .
geography
The Parish is located in southeast Louisiana, borders Mississippi in the east , is about 30 km from the Gulf of Mexico in the southeast and has an area of 2911 square kilometers, of which 699 square kilometers are water.
The Parish is located on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain , the largest brackish lake in the United States. In the east, the Pearl River forms the border with the state of Mississippi.

St. Tammany Parish was formed in 1810 from parts of the West Florida Territory. It was named after Tamanend (1628–1698), chief of Lenni Lenape .

According to the 2000 census , St. Tammany Parish had 191,268 people in 69,253 households and 52,701 families. The population density was 86 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 87.03 percent white, 9.90 percent African American, 0.43 percent Native American, 0.74 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.61 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.26 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 2.48 percent of the population.
Of the 69,253 households, 39.3 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 61.4 percent were married couples living together, 11.0 percent were single mothers, 23.9 percent were non-families, 19.7 percent were single households and 6.7 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.73 and the average family size was 3.15.
In relation to the entire Parish, the population was composed of 28.4 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 7.3 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 29.9 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 24.3 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 10.0 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 96.1 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over, there were 92.4 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 47,883 , and the median income for a family is $ 55,346. Males had a median income of $ 41,876 versus $ 25,996 for females. The per capita income was $ 22,514. 7.6 percent of families and 9.7 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 11.8 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 10.1 percent were people over 65 years of age.
