Cities on the Pearl River

The Pearl River flows through or near the following cities (north to south):

Cruise on the Pearl River

To the west of Picayune, about 80 km above the mouth, the river divides . The East Pearl River empties into Lake Borgne, where the dredged Pearl River Channel meets the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway . The water then flows eastward past Grand Island through St. Joe Pass and into Mississippi Sound . The West Pearl River, on the other hand, flows into the Rigolets and thus ultimately also into Lake Borgne. Eventually the water reaches the Gulf of Mexico .

The Pearl River forms the border between Mississippi and Louisiana on 187 kilometers of its lower course .

The United States Army Corps of Engineers has carried out three major projects to facilitate navigation in the river basin. In 1880, the United States Congress approved a 1.5 meter deep fairway on the West Pearl River between Jackson and the Rigolets. This project was discontinued in 1922. From 1910 onwards, a canal was dredged from the mouth of the East Pearl River into Lake Borgne. This project will continue on an irregular basis. It made the river navigable between Bogalusa and the mouth of the West Pearl River. Three locks are part of this project . The Corps of Engineers has only pursued this project as a conservation measure since the 1970s because commercial traffic is declining.

In the 1950s, concrete underwater sleepers were built to keep the water level in the fairway stable. These thresholds have the fish migration of pike and other migratory fish prevented. A stone fish ladder built in 2003 supports these species on their way to the upper reaches of the river. Environmental groups have called for further measures.

Hurricane Katrina

Hurricane Katrina caused extensive damage to the course of the Pearl River in August 2005. Debris and uprooted trees, including bald cypress and Virginia oak, blocked the mouth of the West Pearl River and other sections of the river, hampering shipping and diverting the current. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries and other agencies removed more than 27,000 cubic meters of broken timber and other debris from the river bed .

Culture

The country music band Pearl River is named after the river.
