The Winston County is a county in the US state of Mississippi . The county seat is Louisville , which was named after the city of the same name in Kentucky .

The county is located slightly northeast of the geographic center of Mississippi and has an area of 1,580 square kilometers, of which eight square kilometers are water, including Lake Tiak-O 'Khata . It borders on the following counties:

Winston County was formed on December 23, 1833 from parts of Choctaw land . It was named after the judge Louis Winston .

According to the 2000 census , Winston County had 20,160 people in 7,578 households and 5,471 families. The population density was 13 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 55.26 percent white, 43.25 percent African American, 0.66 percent Native American, 0.08 percent Asian and 0.28 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.46 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 1.21 percent of the population.
Of the 7,578 households, 33.5 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 49.9 percent were married couples living together, 18.1 percent were single mothers, and 27.8 percent were non-families. 25.2 percent of all households were single households and 12.5 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 3.09.
26.8 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 9.2 percent between 18 and 24, 26.1 percent between 25 and 44, 22.5 percent between 45 and 64 years old, and 15.5 percent were 65 years or older . The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 93.7 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 88.3 males.
The average income of a household amounted to 28,256 USD , for a family is 33,602 USD. Males had a median income of $ 28,665 versus $ 18,210 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,548. About 19.4 percent of families and 23.7 percent of the population were below the poverty line .
