The county is located in the south of Mississippi, about 10 km to the southwest from Louisiana , about 90 km to the south from the Gulf of Mexico and has an area of ​​1,296 square kilometers, of which nine square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

history

LQC Lamar

Lamar County was formed on February 19, 1904 from parts of Marion County and Pearl River County. It was named after Lucius Quintus Cincinnatus Lamar (1825-1893), a member of the United States Congress , Secretary of the Interior, and Justice at the United States Supreme Court .

Two structures in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places as of February 2, 2018.

As of the 2000 census , Lamar County had 39,070 people in 14,396 households and 10,725 families. The population density was 30 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 85.34 percent white, 12.90 percent African American, 0.17 percent Native American, 0.65 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island region and 0.30 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.64 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.09 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups.
