The Newton County is a county in the US state of Mississippi . The county seat is Decatur , named after Stephen Decatur , a naval officer and hero in the British-American War of 1812.

The county is located just east of the geographic center of Mississippi, about 60 km from Alabama , and covers an area of 1,501 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

history
Newton County was formed on February 25, 1836 from parts of Neshoba County. It was named after Isaac Newton , an English physicist , mathematician , astronomer , alchemist , philosopher and theologian .
Six buildings and sites in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 2, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Newton County had 21,838 people in 8,221 households and 6,001 families. The population density was 15 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 65.01 percent white, 30.37 percent African American, 3.68 percent Native American, 0.18 percent Asian and 0.33 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.44 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race belonged to any of the above mentioned groups.
Of the 8,221 households, 33.5 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 53.0 percent were married couples living together, 16.0 percent were single mothers, and 27.0 percent were non-families. 24.6 percent of all households were single households and 11.6 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.04.
26.2 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 11.2 percent between 18 and 24, 26.0 percent between 25 and 44, 21.7 percent between 45 and 64 years old, and 14.9 percent were 65 years or older . The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 92.4 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 88.7 males.
The average income of a household amounted to 28,735 USD , for a family is 34,606 USD. Males had a median income of $ 27,820 versus $ 20,757 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,008. About 16.4 percent of families and 19.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line .
